چکیده

It is becoming more apparent each day that despite a strong national commitment to excellence in health care, the resources and personnel are finite. It is, therefore, appropriate that the medical profession examine the impact of developing technology on the practice and cost of medical care. Such analysis, carefully conducted, could potentially impact on the cost of medical care without diminishing the effectiveness of that care. To this end, the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association in 1980 established a Task Force on Assessment of Diagnostic and Therapeutic Cardiovascular Procedures with the following charge: The Task Force of the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association shall define the role of specific noninvasive and invasive procedures in the diagnosis and management of cardiovascular disease. The Task Force shall address, when appropriate, the contribution, uniqueness, sensitivity, specificity, indications, contraindications and cost-effectiveness of such specific procedures. The Task Force shall include a Chairman and four members, two representatives from the American Heart Association and two representatives from the Ameri-

The value of myocardial perfusion imaging with Tc-99m MIBI for the prediction of perfusion improvement after percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty

Introduction: Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) is an effective method for revascularizing of stenotic coronary vessels. Lack of response to this treatment, either in symptomatic or asymptomatic patients, is usually due to incomplete revascularization, restenosis, and/or irreversibility of myocardial perfusion. Introduction of a noninvasive metho...

Assessment of patients skin dose undergoing coronary angiography and Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA)

Background: Practice of interventional cardiology procedures such as Coronary angiography (CA) and percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) has largely increased in recent years and is now changing to a matter of routine in many hospitals. The purpose of this study was to measure skin and organ doses in patients undergoing CA and PTCA and to find a probable relation with c...

Attenuated physical exercise capacity in smokers compared with non-smokers after coronary angioplasty despite similar luminal diameters.

AIMS To study the impact of smoking on the change in exercise capacity in patients treated with coronary angioplasty. METHODS Three hundred and sixty-eight men below 70 years of age eligible for percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty without previous coronary interventions were consecutively enrolled. Of the 334 patients (90.8%) who completed the study 77 (23.1%) were current smokers....

Effect of percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty on arrhythmias complicating angina.

Four patients who had stenosis of a single major coronary artery which was treated by percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty are described. Three had exercise induced myocardial ischaemia complicated by ventricular tachycardia, fibrillation, and sinus bradycardia, respectively. Asystole developed in a fourth patient who had spontaneous chest pain. After successful percutaneous translumi...
